Did you know Indonesia is the third largest cocoa producer in the world?
Cocoa is a tricky plant to grow, needing the right amount of heat, humidity and sunlight, it grows best around the Equator, with the Ivory Coast and Ghana being the biggest producers. However, with hotter temperatures and more rain due to climate change growing conditions are not as favourable as they used to be and many farmers are turning to palm oil production instead.
Within Indonesia a 'farmer to bar' company called Krakakoa is on a mission to improve the sustainability of cocoa farming in Indonesia and the livelihood of its farmers. They offer education and support to the farmers so they can grow cocoa organically with sustainable and practical farming methods.
Krakakoa are the first Indonesian chocolate company to win awards in the British based annual Academy of Chocolate Awards. If you ever find yourself in Bali it's worth looking them up....
